Alyssa is a choreographer, dancer, performance artist, writer, and educator who draws upon a diverse range of dance, Pilates, and fitness vocabularies, techniques, and art. Alyssa uses her life experiences to enhance and inspire the lives of people through various forms of movement. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Alyssa started her dance education at the age of three and has been dancing ever since. Alyssa has been trained in New York, Ohio, and California and studied various forms of movement, ranging from dance forms such as Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop/ Break dancing, Lyrical, Pointe, Liturgical, Belly dance, Modern (Taylor, Mark Morris, Graham, Limon/Humphrey, Fenley), Contemporary, and African dance; along with other forms such as Pilates, Yoga, Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Basketball, Cheerleading, Fitness training, Cardio dance, and more.
After graduating from college Alyssa headed west to California to further her dreams of dancing. In California, after receiving her Masters in Fine Arts in Dance Performance and Choreography from Mills College, Alyssa became certified in Pilates after having been introduced to it in New York in 1998 at a summer dance program. Alyssa loved the way Pilates helped correct her posture and alignment, and made her feel grounded and stronger in all of her movement activities, from carrying groceries to taking dance class.
Alyssa received her Pilates certifications and training in San Francisco in 2004- 2009, focusing on an Eve Gentry style and therapy based program using a Balanced Body curriculum. In California Alyssa completed over 600 Pilates training hours and is certified in Mat, Ladder Barrel, Chair, Reformer, and Cadillac. In 2012 Alyssa became certified with the Pilates Method Alliance. Alyssa's very talented Pilates mentors and teachers in San Francisco have studied with well known Pilates individuals such as Elizabeth Larkham (Polestar), are instructors with Balanced Body University and Stott® Pilates, and own and operate successful Pilates studios and programs in various locations on the West coast.
Alyssa has over 20 years experience teaching dance and fitness to a variety of ages and levels. Alyssa has taught in Ohio and California at gyms, Pilates studios, Dance studios, colleges, universities, wellness centers, artist residencies, and workshops, and has also served as a personal health coach for individuals. Alyssa has been a faculty member at numerous colleges and universities teaching a wide variety of courses in the physical education and dance departments in the San Francisco Bay Area, has been a visiting artist in the Dance Department of Mills College, and most recently a visiting professor of Dance at The College of Wooster. Alyssa currently teaches dance at Cuyahoga Community College and at Baldwin Wallace University.
As a professional dancer and choreographer, Alyssa established her performance and dance company group A in 2002, a new media dance and performance group committed to placing dance in close contact with other art forms, that performs nationally and internationally. Additionally, Alyssa has danced professionally with a variety of professional modern dance companies based in San Francisco, and since 2002 Alyssa has danced with the NYC based dance company Molissa Fenley and Dancers and also serves as Ms. Fenley's assistant for the past 6 years.
Alyssa encourages individuals to find fitness and dance that is fun and fulfilling to enhance and improve their lives.
